Abstract Plywood panel has a promising market in Wood Frame Construction System. Like any wood-based product, it can suffer deterioration, and preservative treatment is imperative. The preservative treatment can be done directly on a pressed panel - a conventional method that supposedly causes a decrease in physical-mechanical performance - or incorporated into the production process, by the previous treatment of veneers to develop panels with durability and quality. We compared the performance of these two processes. Panels were produced with Pinus taeda L., using 360 g m-2 of phenolic adhesive in a double line, a pre-pressing and hot pressing for 20 minutes under 1.2 MPa pressure and 130°C and treatement on veneers and panels with CCA-C. Tests followed Brazilian standards. Panels with previous treatment had lower water absorption and swelling. Preservation of the veneers also promoted higher retention levels and better penetration of preservatives. Both treatments did not affect the mechanical performance.

Abstract Wood is comparatively more conservative than other parts of trees, such as leaves, which present greater phenotypic plasticity. We studied the effect of seed origin on annual increment, physical-mechanical properties and anatomical characteristics of Balfourodendron riedelianum wood in a homogeneous plantation (Luiz Antônio Experimental Station (LAES)) from three natural provenances (Gália and Bauru in São Paulo State and Alvorada do Sul in Paraná State, Brazil). Because genotypic information is a determinant of wood formation, trees were expected to develop wood structure based on their provenances. Our results demostrate that variations in volume, properties and wood anatomy were influenced by provenance. Alvorada do Sul trees showed lower growth in volume and higher strength and homogeneity, compared to Gália and Bauru. Typical radial pattern was not observed for most characteristics, except modulus of elasticity and fiber length in Gália and compression parallel to the grain in Bauru that increased towards the bark. Based on the latter characteristc, B. riedelianum wood in a homogeneous planting has class C40 mechanical strength, as indicated for use in medium-sized structures, light civil construction and the manufacture of furniture.

Resumen La madera es comparativamente más conservadora que otras partes de los árboles, como las hojas, que presentan una mayor plasticidad fenotípica. Se estudió el efecto del origen de la semilla sobre el incremento anual, las propiedades físico-mecánicas y las características anatómicas de la madera de Balfourodendron riedelianum en una plantación homogénea (LAES) de tres procedencias (Gália y Bauru en Estado de São Paulo y Alvorada do Sul en Estado de Paraná, Brasil). Debido a que la información genotípica es un determinante de la formación de la madera, se esperaba que los árboles desarrollaran una estructura de madera basada en sus genética de las procedencias. Los resultados de este estudio demuestran que las variaciones en volumen, propiedades y anatomía de la madera fueron influenciadas por la procedencia. Los árboles de Alvorada do Sul mostraron menor crecimiento en volumen y, por lo tanto, mayor resistencia y homogeneidad, en comparación con Gália y Bauru. El patrón radial típico no fue observado para la mayoría de las características, excepto el módulo de la elasticidad y la longitud de la fibra en Gália y la compresión paralela al grano en Bauru que aumentó en dirección a la corteza. Con base en esta última característica, la madera de B. riedelianum en plantación homogénea tiene una resistencia mecánica de clase C40, tal como se indica para su uso en estructuras medianas, construcción civil ligera y fabricación de muebles.

ABSTRACT Guapuruvu is one of the fastest growing Atlantic Forest species. It is also considered one of most important species in forest recovery areas, starting to compete with other individuals during the second stage of succession, as well as showing a capacity to be harvested and processed at this stage, after fulfilling its function as a pioneer. There are no conclusive studies about the technological potential of the wood from the young guapuruvu trees characteristic of this context. The present study evaluated the physical-mechanical properties and quality of guapuruvu wood from young trees (15 years old) from forest recovery areas in accordance with NBR 7190. The presence of tension wood did not influence the homogeneity of the wood, which is classified as strength class C20 – hardwood, with characteristic strength of 21.47 MPa in compression parallel to the grain, characteristic tension strength of 23.12 MPa parallel to grain and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of 5,925 MPa. Basic and apparent densities were 290 kg/m3 and 336 kg/m3 respectively. However, its low density did not lead to low mechanical strength. The high ratio between the values of its mechanical properties and apparent density, added to its high homogeneity – despite the presence of tension wood – demonstrated the good quality of its wood.

RESUMO O estudo teve como objetivo analisar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas do carvão de clones de eucalipto por análise de componentes principais e demonstrar as correlações entre essas propriedades, a fim de avaliar qual propriedade de carvão deve ser almejada no processo para obter um produto de alta qualidade. Desta forma, foram cortados oito clones de Eucalyptus e dois de Corymbia, coletando três árvores por clone e cinco discos em diferentes alturas. Os discos foram transformados em amostras para ensaio, totalizando uma média de 75 amostras por clones, que foram carbonizados sob condições específicas para a análise da densidade aparente, compressão paralela às fibras e degradação linear e volumétrica devido à alta temperatura. Vale ressaltar que os dados foram ponderados pelo disco e por árvore, para a uma média mais próxima da realidade. Para as correlações, foi utilizada a análise multivariada de componentes principais. Nisto, verificou-se a ação da densidade aparente do carvão como o ponto focal das outras propriedades estudadas e observou-se que quanto maior a densidade, maior será a força de compressão paralela à grã, o módulo de elasticidade e o rendimento gravimétrico.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of charcoal from eucalypt clones by principal component analysis and demonstrate the relationships between these properties, in order to assess which charcoal property should aimed in the process to obtain a higher quality product. In this way, was cut eight clones of Eucalyptus and two of Corymbia, collecting three trees per clone and five disk in different heights. The disks were transformed into test samples, totaling an average of 75 samples per clones, which were carbonized under specific conditions for analysis of apparent density, compressive strength parallel to grain and linear and volumetric degradation due to high temperature. It is noteworthy that the data were weighted by disk and per tree, to an average closer to reality. For correlations, was used multivariate analysis of principal components. Herein, it is found that the apparent density of charcoal acts as the focal point of the other properties studied, and observed that as the higher the density, higher will be the compressive strength parallel to grain, the elastic modulus and the gravimetric yield.

RESUMO O uso de florestas de Eucalyptus tem se tornado cada vez mais expressivo no Brasil, sobretudo por conta da excelente produção em termos volumétricos por elas alcançadas e pelas boas características da madeira obtida. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo identificar os melhores espaçamentos de plantio para florestas clonais de um híbrido interespecífico de Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus urophylla, de forma a maximizar a produção de biomassa do fuste por hectare buscando a área vital por árvore em um intervalo que favorecesse o crescimento em diâmetro e a formação de madeira de maior densidade básica. Os dados foram disponibilizados pela empresa Duratex Florestal e são provenientes de um teste clonal exploratório de 72 meses de idade. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi o sistemático com fator quantitativo contínuo, com 16 tratamentos e 40 repetições, considerando que a variação entre os tratamentos foi o espaçamento entre as árvores e a entrelinha possuía um espaçamento constante de três metros. Com este arranjo, o experimento possuiu área vital por árvore variando de 1,50 m2 (6.667 árvores por hectare) até 15,75 m2 (635 árvores por hectare). A maior produção em volume e biomassa do fuste por hectare ocorreu nos tratamentos com espaçamento de plantio adensado - 3 x 0,50 m; nos espaçamentos amplos, a partir de 9,00 m² de área vital por planta, a produção de volume e biomassa do fuste por árvore foi maior. Foi observado um aumento na densidade básica ponderada da madeira até a área vital de 4,95 m² por árvore, a partir desta área vital, a densidade básica se manteve praticamente inalterada.

ABSTRACT The use of forests of Eucalyptus has become more expressive in Brazil, mostly because of the excellent production in volumetric terms reached by them and the good characteristics of the obtained wood. The present work was developed to search the best plantations spacings for clonal forests of a interspecific hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla, to maximize the production of the stem biomass per hectare. The data were made available by the company 'Duratex Florestal' and are proceeding from a clonal test at the age of 72 months. The used statistician delineation was the systematic one with continuous quantitative factor, 16 treatments and 40 repetitions, considering that the variation between the treatments was the spacing between the trees and the space between rows was constant with three meters. Along with this arrangement, the vital area per tree was 1,50m2 (6.667 trees per hectare) to 15,75m2 (635 trees per hectare). The highest production volume and stem biomass per hectare occurred in spacing treatments with dense planting - 3x0, 50m, in large spacings (from 9.00 m² per plant life), it was on volume and biomass per tree stem. In this study, it was observed an increase in the weighted basic density of timber to the vital area of 4.95 m² per tree. From this vital area, the basic density remained virtually unchanged.

A madeira de florestas plantadas constitui a principal fonte de matéria-prima para produção de painéis aglomerados no Brasil. O aproveitamento dos resíduos florestais para produção desses painéis ainda não foi implementado em nível industrial. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar as propriedades físicas dos painéis de madeira aglomerada (MDP - medium density particleboard) de três camadas, fabricados industrialmente na linha de produção da empresa Eucatex S.A. Indústria e Comércio, utilizando madeira de Eucalyptus grandis e resíduos industriais madeireiros (material reciclado de paletes e serragem), em diferentes proporções, variando de 10% a 35% em volume. O material foi disponibilizado pela empresa, na unidade industrial MDP localizada no município de Botucatu - SP, onde foram fabricados os painéis em escala industrial. Os ensaios físicos foram realizados no Laboratório de Processo da Eucatex e no Laboratório de Ensaios de Materiais do Departamento de Engenharia Rural da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas - UNESP - Botucatu, SP. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que os painéis estudados tiveram bom desempenho físico, atendendo, no geral, as especificações técnicas estabelecidas pelas normas técnicas, mesmo nos tratamentos com as maiores proporções de adições. O teor de umidade final do painel teve efeito nas propriedades estudadas com tendência generalizada de redução nos valores de absorção de água e inchamento em espessura quando o teor de umidade final do painel aumentou de 9% para 12,5%.

In Brazil, the wood from planted forests constitutes the main material source for the production of particleboards. The utilization of forest residues for production of these panels was not implemented in industrial level yet. This work had the objective of evaluating the physical properties of three layers particleboard, industrially manufactured, using wood of Eucalyptus grandis from plantation and industrial wood residues in different ratios (adittion from 10% to 35% in volume). The material (Eucalyptus grandis wood and industrial residues - recycled pallets and sawdust) was supplied by Eucatex S. A. Ind. e Com. located in Botucatu - Sao Paulo State, Brazil, where the panels had been manufactured in Eucatex plant. Physical tests were carried out at the Process Laboratories of Eucatex and in the Materials Testing Laboratory, Rural Engineering Department of the College of Agronomic Sciences - Sao Paulo State University - UNESP. Results revealed that panels had very good physical performance, attending, in general, to all the technical specifications established by the product standards, even in the treatments with higher addition of residues. The final moisture content of the panel presented effect in the properties studied with general trend of reduction in water absorption and swelling in thickness when the moisture content increased from 9% for 12,5%.

ABSTRACT Latex is the main product extracted from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). In Brazil, at the end of the production cycle of latex, the wood of rubber tree is traditionally used for energy purposes, but several international studies have reported consolidated practices of adding value to it. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the quality of wood and classify it structurally based on its mechanical properties. Six 20-year-old trees of the clone GT 1 of rubber tree proceeding from Itajobi, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil were sampled. Reduced dimensions specimens in the radial direction of the wood were produced to evaluate the quality by compression parallel to the grain, static bending and Janka hardness tests. Two specimens, one from the lower log (since the ground up to breast height) and one from the higher log (from breast height up to 2.50 m) were produced for structural classification of the wood based on the characteristic strength in compression parallel to the grain (NBR 7190 norm, 1997). The wood was classified as C40 (fc0k ≥ 40 MPa) class. Results revealed that the strength was not statistically different in the radial direction (except for the Janka hardness), though tending to increase from pith to bark.

RESUMO O látex é o principal produto extraído das árvores de seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis). No Brasil, ao final do ciclo produtivo de látex, a madeira dessas árvores é utilizada tradicionalmente para fins energéticos, mas diversos trabalhos internacionais relatam práticas consolidadas de agregação de valor a ela. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade da madeira e classificá-la estruturalmente a partir de propriedades mecânicas do lenho de árvores do clone comercial GT 1 de seringueira. Foram utilizadas seis árvores provenientes de plantio de 20 anos de idade da cidade de Itajobi-SP. Da tora inferior (desde a base até a altura do DAP), foram produzidos corpos de prova de dimensões reduzidas, na direção radial do lenho, para avaliação da qualidade pelos ensaios de compressão paralela às fibras, flexão estática e dureza Janka; da tora superior (do DAP até a altura de 2,50 m), foram produzidos dois corpos de prova por árvore, para a classificação estrutural baseada no ensaio de compressão paralela às fibras (NBR 7190, 1997 (ABNT, 1997)). A madeira foi classificada estruturalmente como classe C40. Os resultados revelaram que a resistência não apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa na direção radial (a menos da dureza Janka), sendo observada, no entanto, tendência de aumento no sentido medula-casca.

ABSTRACT After concluding the main phase of commercial exploration of latex (about 30 years ago), rubber wood plantations can be utilized as an alternative source of wood for sawmills and other wood based products with more aggregate value; tendency already confirmed in countries of southeastern Asia. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate the influence of dynamic modulus of elasticity veneers on the mechanical performance in the bending of plywood made from Hevea brasiliensis. For this study, rubber tree veneers were sorted in three classes of dynamic modulus of elasticity: low (from 4887-7323 MPa), medium (from 8200-8948 MPa) and high (from 10979-13010 MPa). Panels were produced according to five treatments with different veneer classes and arrangements. Results showed significant effect of the treatments in the mechanical performance in the bending of panels. Panels with better mechanical performance were produced exclusively with medium and high dynamic modulus of elasticity. Panels made with low modulus of elasticity veneers presented lower mechanical performance even when combined with high modulus of elasticity veneers.

RESUMO Depois de concluída a fase principal de exploração comercial do látex (cerca de 30 anos), os plantios de seringueira apresentam-se como fonte alternativa de madeira para serraria e para outros produtos à base de madeira com valor agregado superior ao da lenha, tendência já consagrada em países do sudeste asiático. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo principal avaliar a influência do módulo de elasticidade dinâmico (Ed) das lâminas no desempenho mecânico à flexão de painéis compensados de Hevea brasiliensis. Para este estudo, as lâminas de seringueira foram selecionadas em três classes de módulo de elasticidade dinâmico, definidas como baixo (de 4887-7323 MPa), médio (de 8200-8948 MPa) e alto (de 10979-13010 MPa) módulo de elasticidade. Foram confeccionados painéis compensados com cinco tratamentos, variando-se as classes das lâminas utilizadas e seus arranjos. Os resultados obtidos revelaram influência significativa dos tratamentos na resistência à flexão dos painéis. Os painéis com melhor desempenho mecânico foram confeccionados exclusivamente com lâminas de alto e médio módulo de elasticidade dinâmico. Os painéis que utilizaram lâminas com baixo módulo de elasticidade apresentaram menor desempenho mecânico, mesmo quando elas estavam combinadas com lâminas de alto módulo.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo principal avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas de painéis LVL (Laminated veneer lumber) confeccionados com lâminas de Eucalyptus grandis, provenientes de reflorestamentos da região de Sengés, Paraná - Brasil. Foram confeccionados painéis LVL de 23 lâminas, de dimensões comerciais de 2500 mm de comprimento, 1200 mm de largura e espessura nominal de 50 mm (lâminas de 2,4 mm). Em vigas retiradas dos painéis LVL foram analisadas as propriedades de flexão estática (rigidez e resistência), nas condições de menor inércia (flatwise) e de maior inércia (edgewise), compressão paralela, cisalhamento paralelo nos planos L-X e L-Y e densidade, atendendo às prescrições das normas ASTM-D 5456/4761 e ASTM-D 198/143. Os valores médios obtidos para o módulo de elasticidade e resistência à flexão estática foram, respectivamente, 13114 MPa e 88,76 MPa para o ensaio na condição de menor inércia e de, respectivamente, 15871 MPa e 88,63 MPa para o ensaio na condição de maior inércia. A densidade aparente (a 12% de umidade) dos painéis LVL e das lâminas foram, respectivamente, 690 kg/ m3 e 649 kg/m3. Os valores médios obtidos nos ensaios de compressão paralela foram 16856 MPa para o módulo de elasticidade e 58,05 MPa para a resistência. Os valores médios da resistência no ensaio de cisalhamento paralelo no plano L-Y e no plano L-X foram 5,96 MPa e 5,91 MPa, respectivamente. Todos esses valores atingiram parcialmente ou ultrapassaram os limites médios de referência estabelecidos para painéis LVL e para a madeira sólida originária, atestando, sobretudo, a qualidade dos painéis produzidos com essa madeira.

ABSTRACT This paper mainly aimed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of LVL panels made from Eucalyptus grandis, from reforestation at the region of Sengés, in Paraná state, Brazil. LVL panels were manufactured using 23 veneers (2,4mm thick each one) in commercial dimension of 2.500 mm long and 1,200 mm wide. The properties of static bending were analyzed (strength and rigidity) in beams of the LVL, in the flatwise and edgewise positions. The properties of compression parallel to grain and shear parallel in the plans L-X and L-Y and density in this LVL panels were also analyzed according to ASTM-D 5456/4761 and ASTM-D 198 codes. The mean values to flatwise bending MOE and MOR were 13114 MPa and 88.76 MPa, respectively, and for edgewise bending MOE and MOR were 15871 MPa and 88.63 MPa, respectively. The density (12%) of the LVL panels and of the veneers were 690 kg/m3 and 649 kg/m3. The mean values to parallel compression MOE and MOR were 16856 MPa and 58.05 MPa, respectively. The mean values of the maximum resistance to shear parallel in the plans L-X and L-Y were 5.96 MPa and 591 MPa, respectively. All these values reached partially or they passed the medium limits of reference (normative codes, researches and commercial catalogs) established for LVL panels and original solid wood, attesting overall the quality of those panels produced with this wood.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi o estudo da variabilidade das propriedades de resistência e rigidez à flexão estática e à densidade aparente (12%) entre a madeira juvenil e adulta de Pinus taeda L., de 37 anos de idade, procedente do Horto Florestal de Manduri, Estado de São Paulo. Na primeira parte do trabalho foram determinadas a região de madeira juvenil, a região de transição e a região de madeira adulta, por meio de estudos anatômicos (comprimento dos traqueídes axiais), segundo as recomendações das normas ABNT e IAWA. Os resultados mostraram que a região de madeira juvenil dessa espécie ocorre aproximadamente até o 18º anel de crescimento. Na segunda parte do trabalho foram analisados a resistência (módulo de ruptura - MOR) à flexão, o módulo de elasticidade (MOE) nessa mesma solicitação e a densidade aparente (12%) para as madeiras juvenil e adulta. Os resultados mostraram que o MOE e o MOR da madeira juvenil foram menores e mais variáveis que aqueles obtidos para madeira adulta. A densidade apresentou a mesma tendência observada nas propriedades avaliadas no ensaio de flexão estática.

This paper aimed to study the variability on rigidity (MOE) and strength (MOR) properties in static bending and density (12 %) between juvenile and mature wood of 37-year-old Pinus taeda L. trees from Horto Florestal, Manduri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the first part of the experimental program, the juvenile, transition and mature wood zones were determined using anatomical analysis (tracheids length) according to the ABNT and IAWA codes. Results showed that juvenile wood zone occurs approximately up to the 18th growth ring. In the second part of the experimental setup, bending tests were performed with both juvenile and mature wood samples gathered in two distinct groups to obtain their modulus of rupture - MOR, modulus of elasticity -MOE and density (12%). Results showed that MOE and MOR of juvenile wood were always smaller and presented more variability, when compared to mature wood. Density at 12% showed the same tendency observed in the mechanical tests.
